Why can’t the states have uniform rules?

Trying to navigate a business through the COVID-19 crisis is going to be hard for many businesses and so, we all need to work together.

The complexity of all the different state regulations has really come to the light for so many businesses and, adding the burden of trying to meet all the compliance obligations, is simply overwhelming.

One small example that shows the issue: pay-roll tax. One of the most hated taxes by businesses owners, as it is a disincentive to employment.

To assist businesses, the state governments are waiving it for a while then deferring it. Well done – great initiative, and I know this is going to help many businesses.

All the states test this on the organisations annual Australian income, but there is always one that has to be different causing more work and complexity. Victoria this time tests it on Victorian pay-roll. Sounds easy until you are on the cusp and you have to forecast what contractors you will continue. As we work through helping businesses, it just adds so much unnecessary work and added risk.

Can any one understand why there has to be one difference? Thank goodness there is only one difference on only this one point, at least. I know that Victoria has to fund a massive increase in the politicians salaries, but come on now! Please keep your rules in line with the other states.

It is just so frustrating a diversion to the business when they can least afford it. And this is just one example.

Business owners, I feel your pain.
