Where to get help in times of crisis

Yesterday, after I posted the article talking about the tragedy of suicide, I received a few messages checking on me and, some other, thanking me for touching this sensitive topic.

Today, I read that calls from Victorians to crisis support and suicide prevention service Lifeline are up 22 per cent since Sunday, compared to the same time period last year (thank you, Janette).

They received almost 90,000 calls per month since March, which is one call every thirty seconds. These numbers go hand in hand with the lock down measures and, since we are still at home for a few more weeks, they will more than likely maintain.

As the Lifeline Chairman said: “…don’t suffer in silence.” Please encourage anyone experiencing hardship, signs of depression, or loneliness to take a look at the Lifeline website. They have resources to help people understand why they are feeling like they do. It is a great non-judgemental confidential service and they are not interested in any identifying information.

It is everyone’s job, avoiding these measures take a higher toll on the mental health of our loved ones. The 24-hour Lifeline number that anyone can call is 13 11 14. Alternatively, you can text them from 6pm to 12am (AEST) every night on 0477 13 11 14.
