Using the lessons learned from Claims

One of the reasons I have enjoyed a lifetime working in claims is the interesting places you get to visit. It is great if you are a natural ‘sticky beak’ like me.

I was speaking with one of my mentors, Murray Rowley who was the senior partner of the loss adjusting practice that I joined in 1982. Murray now heads LMI’s Mining Division and in our discussion yesterday, he mentioned that the Freeport Mine in Irian Jaya, is one of the most interesting places he has ever visited in his 50+ years of handling mining losses. Another benefit of claims is you improve your geography. The province of Irian Jaya, which translates to Glorious Irian, is on the same island as the bulk of Papua New Guinea but to the west, with the province forming part of Indonesia.

What the claims team at LMI have been doing over the past 22 years, is taking all the knowledge we gained from the literally thousands of claims we have handled and assist brokers and insurers with business interruption sum insured reviews, risk surveys, business continuity planning, and policy wording reviews and drafting.

With commodity prices on the increase, mothballed mines are being reopened while others are being expanded. As such demand for our services are on the increase.

Of course mining is just one of the many industries that LMI has experience in and with over 1,500 years of collective experience in the claims, risk and insurance review teams, we feel that we add real value to brokers, insurers and insured’s that is second to none.

Taking this knowledge one step further, the knowledge gained is being funneled into LMI College where new courses are being developed in so many areas and of course claims.
