Skylights – Choose Velux

In the recent hail storm in Melbourne my own home was in the thick of it and so far we have replaced over 250 slate tiles. I intend replacing two areas that can be seen from the ground, with iron to reduce the risk in the future.

One thing that I am pleased about and thought I would share, is that despite having six glass skylights, none broke. I chose Velux as they are, to my knowledge, the only fixed (or motorised) skylights rated for hail.

Meanwhile, virtually every car in our street that was not undercover had a smashed windscreen.

I know the glass was hit by hail as big as oranges or cricket balls, and it did not break. One edging on one of the skylights suffered a huge dent, though. See photograph below.

I was worried that this could not be fixed without replacing the whole unit, which so often happens, but the team from Velux were fantastic. I can replace the flashing for $22 plus the two clips that hold it in place for $6. I could not be happier.

So if you are doing any renovations, a new build or replacing skylights damaged in a storm or for any other reason, Velux has my recommendation. You can buy standard sized units, both fixed and openable, from Bunnings.

Compare this to a traditional skylight. The photo below was kindly provided by broker Richard Dunn. My daughter living in the same street as me has the same problem with her skylight. It is not just the cost of the skylight it is the water damage caused by water entering the large penetrations.
