Our safety at risk
The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (“ACCC”) has warned deaths and injury caused by unsafe consumer products costs at least $5 billion a year but amazingly there’s no law against the sale of such items.
Speaking to the National Consumer Congress in Melbourne last week, the ACCC chair Rod Sims said there are around 780 deaths every year caused by consumer products Australians have in their own homes.
There are a further 52,000 injuries incurred by these items.
This is a reminder to anyone that is importing goods into Australia for resale that you are deemed under consumer law that you are the manufacturer. If you do not have Product Liability insurance you are taking on a huge personal risk.
Product Liability insurance does not cover you should a product recall be ordered or be required but there is specific cover available.
If you require advice on either product please contact an insurance broker.
