I support the increased fines for texting while driving.
I saw with interest that the penalties for using a mobile phone in Queensland were being increased and that loss of licence would follow a second offence.
Clearly this issue is one of the biggest causes of injury, death and property damage on our roads and many drivers are just not getting the message.
My own wife was hit by a driver plowing through a red light while focusing on their phone. Only be a miracle they missed a pregnant woman.
The key points of the changes in Queensland are:
- The new penalty would be more than double the current fine
- The Government says it’s necessary to stop deaths on Queensland roads
- It says phone companies should also be involved in preventing people from texting and driving
Until the new penalties come into place, the existing fines in each state are as follows but I suspect and hope that other states follow the lead of Queensland.
