Huge increase in Emergency Service Levy go up in 2020-21
The NSW Treasury recently released its 2019-20 Half Yearly Review for the current year as well as updating forward estimates – including for the Emergency Services Levy Contributions for next year i.e. 2020-21.
In Table 3.6 of the Taxation Revenue, the Emergency Services Levy Contributions are forecast to massively increase from $898 million in 2019-20 to $1,143 million in 2020-21 i.e. a 27% increase.
This follows on from an increase of 15% this year from the $780 million gazetted in 2018-19. The total increase is 46% over the 2 years.
I wonder if the bush fires will cause a review of the costs and an even greater increase be called for.
As I have repeated till I am blue in the face, we all benefit from well funded and equipped fire service and so we all ought to share in the funding, not just those who insure.
Premium rate increases will absorb some of the increases as the ESL rates are a based on a percentage of premiums but with this level of increase it will not cover all of the increase in ESL.
Therefore, I predict there will need to be substantial increases in ESL rates in the new year.
