Guest post about the increase of the Emergency Services Levy in NSW

Hi Allan,

I am literally sickened and disgusted with the NSW Government for having the arrogance to foist this increase onto the NSW community, after taking into consideration the unprecedented financial hit that businesses are currently experiencing, both with recent bushfires and now COVID-19.

Where is their common sense, not to mention basic humanity?

I applaud your previous comments and stance in this area, and thought it might interest (and anger) you also.

Changes to the NSW Emergency Services Levy (ESL)

We have recently adjusted our rates for Commercial Property, Construction, SME Property, Private Home, Private Motor and Non-Fleet Motor.

Why is this happening?

The NSW government have given guidance that the Emergency Services Levy (ESL) Contribution Target for 2020-21 will increase by approximately 24% from the current year. These changes are reflected in the table below.

Any renewal or new business terms received for Construction and Commercial Property products with the existing 25% ESL rate, will be honoured by [Insurer].

Fleet ESL rates will remain unchanged.

For more information, contact your local [Insurer] representative.

I cannot believe them. It is just stupid and cruel to struggling businesses, landlords who have tenants not paying rent, and those who have lost their jobs.

  2. Tracey says:

I agree, it is an unfair, taxed tax (GST on a levy).

It severely penalises people responsible enough to have insurance, rather than rate payers, which is a much fairer and broader way of handling these levies.

Allan has been leading a charge against this for years – what can the rest of us do to help get this matter more attention?

Hi Al. Just read your post. No wonder Jesus wept!!!

  4. Allan says:

I think it best that all of us write to our state member complaining and try and get it into the media. It is only with widespread complaining will this ever be corrected.
