Do not forget the cyber exposure facing us all

This year has been dominated by a swag of natural disasters culminating most recently with Cyclone Oma and Bushfires in Western Australia.
However, the ever present risk of cyber attacks continues. Here are three recently reported events.
February 21, 2019
Car manufacturing giant Toyota has been hit by a cyber attack in Australia, with employees locked out of their emails for days.
February 18, 2019
Australia’s major political parties hacked in ‘sophisticated’ attack ahead of election
February 20, 2019
Crime syndicate hacks 15,000 medical files at Cabrini Hospital, demands ransom
If major organisations who you would expect have invested heavily in protecting their data have been successfully attacked then all of us are at risk.
The other thing to keep in mind that there is already talk of much tighter policing of the Notifiable Data Breaches Scheme in the wake of the Hayne Royal Commission.
Therefore careful risk management considerations to protecting your own data including cyber insurance should be top of mind.
For my own part I have done a review of all my passwords and moved to a password manager which I am finding is increasing my productivity besides providing better protection. I still have quality cyber insurance in place should “it” happen to me.
