Another example of why we need insurance

On Saturday, one of our team was out fishing with a friend and was returning back to the boat ramp late afternoon to pull up the boat onto the trailer. While doing this, another SUV, valued in the range of $100,000 reversed down to launch a jet ski.
The driver got back into the car upon launching the Jet Ski and then not realising the vehicle was still in reverse, took their foot off the brake and the vehicle started to roll backwards. Believing the vehicle was slipping on the ramp, the driver has hit the accelerator with force to try and get up the ramp, however the vehicle being in reverse shot backwards straight into the water and off the ramp about 30 meters before sinking.
Because there is a drop at the end of the ramp, coupled with the distance it traveled off, it was not possible to simply winch the car back onto dry land and the recovery required use of a crane, divers and the water police etc.
Meanwhile, no one else could use the ramp while it was cordoned off and became a nightmare situation.
This whole episode looked like a scene out of Dumb & Dumber, with the dumber part being that the vehicle was not Insured, which means the owner of the vehicle will be meeting the costs of the damage, which in all probability is a total write off, as well as the recovery costs which will be quite significant.
This whole financial loss could have been avoided for the sake of a reasonable premium. It always amazes me when people say they can’t afford insurance, to me, you can’t afford not to have it, especially when you are outlaying such a large amount of money for the vehicle itself it is crazy not to cover it.
