An insurance provider should know better – Never throw water on to a stove top fire.
Over the years, I have seen a number of ads where an insurer has got it wrong. Most common is when they play out a loss scenario and when I see it, I immediately know their policy has an exclusion for the event.
This latest one though takes the cake for, in my opinion, getting it horribly wrong.
The ad shows a woman trying to throw water onto a stove top fire while the husband keeps getting in the way due to his trying to recover from something hot he has eaten.
The trouble is that if there is any oil or grease on fire, the water thrown on it instantly becomes super-heated steam and what is best described as an explosion occurs with rapid and significant flame spread.
Having seen the horrific injuries caused to people trying to put out a stove fire like this still prompts me to write this post in the hope the advertisement is pulled off air.
Despite the risk of serious injury, much more fire damage is likely something that a prudent insurer would be keen to reduce.
If you have not seen what can happen when water is put on such a fire, here is a link to one of many videos on the subject on YouTube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JfIRx764-88.
How this current ad made it to air I cannot understand – when it was commissioned by an insurance provider.
I am always happy to provide a sanity check on any insurance advertisement to ensure it is not going to have unintended consequences.
